On July 22, 2009, Teamster Local 177 member, Anthony Condello was unaware of how his reaction to certain events would lead to a child's life being saved.
Anthony, a UPS driver out of the Staten Island facility, was delivering his regular route. As he was approaching his next stop, he noticed an unaccompanied child (about three years old) standing on the sidewalk along a heavily traveled street.
As Anthony approached, the child darted into the street towards the moving traffic.
Anthony instinctively reacted, and chased after the child. He grabbed the child and pulled him to safety just as an oncoming car slammed its brakes and swerved in an attempt to avoid Anthony and the child.
Anthony, with child in his arms, canvassed the local houses and noticed a house with its front door open.
Anthony approached the house, assuring the child he was bringing him to his mommy and daddy. Upon announcing himself in the opened doorway, he was greeted by a frantic and very appreciative mother who happily relieved Anthony of her son.
Anthony explained to the mother what had occurred just minutes ago.
After leaving the child and his mother, Anthony returned to check on the driver of the car that narrowly missed the child. He then returned to his route.
About an hour later, while eating lunch, Anthony was approached by a New York City Firefighter who identified himself as the father of the child Anthony had saved earlier that day.
Anthony said, "the father approached me, shook my hand, and thanked me repeatedly with an emotional tone in his voice".
Anthony explained to the father that he also had young children and he did what any other father would do in that situation.
Anthony was recently recognized for his actions at the Staten Island facility.
The Executive Board and members of Local 177 wish to commend and proudly recognize Anthony Condello for his swift actions resulting in saving a life of a Staten Island toddler.
Well Done Anthony!
